Kalabera Arnis
Estillo de Abanico
(Kali/ Escrima)
Arnis is also known as Kali or Escrima which encompass the traditional Filipino Martial Arts (FMA). FMA is a comprehensive and extremely practical system of martial arts that includes both weapon-based and empty-hand techniques. It is unusual in that you begin training combatively with weapons (impact, edged and flexible weapons), and as skills and understanding deepens, you move to the empty hand curriculum.
Our Anis/Kali curriculum is based mainly around the movement and application of the single stick. Double sticks are used for drills to build coordination, rhythm, and flow. It draws on various lineages of traditional Filipino Martial Arts and even incorporates elements of traditional English sword fighting.
Training is designed to work in true combat timing.
We start with long range techniques as the basis, moving to shorter, medium and close-range techniques. The use of the “live hand” (the hand without a weapon) is an important concept we incorporate which helps with trapping, locking, supporting weapon blocks, checking, disarming, striking and controlling the opponent. It also aids with ambidextrous muscle memory conditioning which is highly regarded for cognition and mental acuity, especially as one ages.
The training utilizes similar body mechanics to our Kickboxing Programme, emphasising power, speed, timing and distance. Our stick training is primarily for self defence as well as the preservation of traditional knowledge from Filipino masters.
